HORSEHEADS — Horseheads blew open a close game with six runs in the top of the sixth inning in a 15-8 win over Waverly here Thursday evening in District 6 Minors Division baseball pool play action.
Horseheads built an early 4-0 lead, but Waverly scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to close the gap to 4-3.
Horseheads countered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Waverly answered with four runs in the home half to tie the game at 7-7.
Horseheads scored twice in the top of the fifth, and Waverly trimmed the lead to 9-8 with a run in the home half of the inning.
Marcel Phillips singled twice and scored two runs, and Samson Reznicek doubled and scored two runs to pace Waverly's five-hit attack.
Ryder Wolcott singled and drove in one run, and Ethan Gray-Wright singled and scored one run for Waverly, while Nate Eck scored one run and knocked in one run, and Helen Roskow and Henry Cheresnowsky each scored one run.
Waverly, now 2-2 in pool play, hosts Corning-Painted Post "A" Saturday.
