BIG FLATS — Waverly built a six-run lead through three innings, then held on for a 9-7 win over Big Flats in the final game of pool play in the District 6 Little League Minors Division baseball playoffs.
Big Flats, playing as the visiting team, started the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning, but Waverly answered with two runs in the bottom of the second, and five more in the third to make it 7-1.
Big Flats scored three runs in the top of the fourth, and one in the fifth to close the gap, but Waverly's scored two big insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-5.
Ryder Wolcott tripled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Henry Cheresnowsky singled twice and scored two runs, and Leevi Sharpsteen doubled, scored one run, and knocked in two runs to pace Waverly's 10-hit attack.
Nate Eck singled and drove in one run in the win, while Ryker Roberts singled and scored two runs, Marcel Phillips and Keatley DeKay each singled and scored one run, and Samson Reznicek added a single.
Marcel Phillips allowed one unearned run on one hit, while striking out five and walking two in two innings of work in the start on the mound for Waverly.
Ethan Gray-Wright had the best turn in relief for Waverly, allowing one unearned run on one hit, with three strikeouts and three walks in 1 1/3 innings.
Waverly finishes pool play at 3-3 and will host Big Flats Tuesday in the opening-round of bracket play.
