CORTLAND — With just nine girls and playing in steamy conditions, Waverly won the New York State Coaches Association 7-v-7 Small School Flag Football Championship here at SUNY Cortland.

"We are just really happy for the girls and super proud of them," said coach Dave Shaw. "It was a hot day, we only had nine girls, but they sure competed like crazy.

"Every girl contributed and it was nice too see," he noted.

"It was a great way to end year three, and build momentum heading into the offseason. We will continue to work hard and build this thing from the bottom up.

"There weren't too many people there that thought we had a chance that’s for sure, especially with nine girls when they all had 20-plus in that heat," added Shaw.

Waverly opened with a win over General Brown in the first round, then knocked off Central Square in the quarterfinals.

After a win over Chenango Valley in the semifinals, Waverly topped Eastridge in the championship game.
