Valley Sports ReportELMIRA — The Waverly High School softball program was recently honored by the Elmira Softball Umpires Association has awarded a local High School Softball Program with the 2026 Sportsmanship Award.
According to a press release from the umpires association: "This award does not just apply to the varsity team, but to the school's entire softball program at all levels, including modified, JV and varsity.
"Displaying sportsmanship and respect to the officials illustrates great character in a team's makeup, playing by the rules, and displaying that they were also good winners, as well as good losers.
"We, as officials, believe sportsmanship is one of the most valuable characteristics a student-athlete, coach and entire team / program can possess."
Corning, Elmira, Horseheads, and Thomas A. Edison were also nominated for the award.
"The other high school softball programs that were nominated by our association for this year's award, and their respective programs should be proud they were recognized for this honor," said the press release.
