SAYRE — Towanda pounded out 381 yards on the ground, and scored eight rushing touchdowns in a dominating, 55-2, season-opening win over Sayre here Friday night in NTL football action at the Lockhart Street Bowl.
Jazcik Brown, who rushed for 183 yards and two TDs on just eight carries, and Gage Evans, who had 118 yards and three TDs on 10 carries, scored on runs of 20 and 14 yards, respectively, in Towanda's first two possessions of the game.
Brayden Spencer add extra-point kicks after both scores to give the Black Knights a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Redskins got on the board early in the second quarter. Following an interception by Towanda's Gabe Wolf at the Sayre 1, a Black Knight shotgun snap sailed out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
After Sayre's two-pointer, Towanda put the game away with four second-quarter TDs to take a 43-2 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Knights started the second-scoring spree with an 11-yard TD run by Curtis Maynard. Reese Sluyter's pass to Joey Montonya for the 2-point conversion made it 22-2.
Evans scored the next two TDs on runs of 13 and 9 yards, and Sluyter tacked on a conversion run to put Towanda up 36-2.
Sluyter scored on a 1-yard TD run late in the first half, and Spencer added the PAT.
Brown tacked on a 9-yard TD run in the third quarter, and Drew Maghamez finished off the scoring with a 6-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Sluyter completed 3 of 5 pass attempts for 54 yards, and Elijah Johnson was 1-for-1 for 32 yards.
Shane Maghamez led Towanda with two receptions for 44 yards.
The Redskins were plagued by five turnovers, including four interceptions — two by Wolf, and one each by Kolton McPeak and Elijah Johnson.
Hudson Malanoski led the Redskins with 33 rushing yards on 15 carries, and Riley Johnson added 22 yards on five carries.
Barry was 2 of 13 for 44 yards for the Redskins, with Tyrese Gamby (25 yards) and Quin Chandler (19 yards) each hauling down one reception.
Towanda piled up 467 yards in total offense to Sayre's 106.
Sayre returns to action Friday at South Williamsport.
