Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly shook off a loss in the first set, rallying for a 3-1 win over Groton here Thursday night in non-league volleyball action.
The RedHawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first set on its way to a 25-18 win.
Waverly rallied from an early deficit in the second set on its way to a 25-12 win in the second set, and kept the momentum going with a 25-9 win in the third set.
The Wolverines closed out the win with a hard-fought, 25-23, win in the fourth set.
"We started off with a lot of energy and came out swinging," said Waverly coach Hailee Rote. "We went down early with a lot of hitting errors, but we turned it around.
"The girls found their rhythm , remained calm, and controlled the match.
"Meeya Wheeler is a huge leader and provides stability and consistency," noted Rote.
"Addison Foster and Leraya Teeter stepped up and found the open spots on the court, while Ellie Cole and Layla Oeschlin passed consistently and led our defense.
I look forward to watching the girls continue to grow through out the season," added Rote.
Freshman Meeya Wheeler led Waverly with 35 setter assists, two service aces, and two digs, while freshman Addison Foster registered nine kills and six blocks, and sophomore Leraya Teeter recorded 10 kills, five aces, and four digs.
Junior Ellie Cole and freshman Layla Oechslin each had 10 digs in the win.
Waverly, now 2-0, returns to action Wednesday at Owego Free Academy.
