Valley Sports ReportPOPLAR RIDGE — Southern Cayuga scored three second-half goals to pull away for a 5-1 win over Tioga here Thursday afternoon in a rematch of last year's IAC Small School girls soccer championship game.
"We played a great first half, much improved overall compared to Marathon game," said interim Tioga coach Jim Walsh, who noted Southern Cayuga's depth was the difference in the heat and humidity.
"They had an army of players / subs, 21 overall compared to our 12 players, and were therefore able to stay fresh," added Walsh.
Haylee Young netted a hat trick, and Rosie Lennon scored twice to account for Southern Cayuga's offense.
Sophomore Grace Howey scored an unassisted goal for Tioga.
Southern Cayuga had a 19-2 edge in shots-on-goal.
Senior Marcy Moniz recorded 14 saves in net for the Tigers.
Tioga, now 0-2, returns to action Tuesday at Newark Valley.
"We opened this year with two solid IAC North opponents; we hope to get back to the winning side of things when we start division play on Tuesday," said Walsh.
