Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Luca Rubin scored four goals in the first half to lead Oneonta to an 8-0 win over Waverly here Monday in STAC boys soccer action.
"This game was a tough watch," said Waverly coach Jon Rankin. "Our goal was to take it one half at a time, while also not forfeiting and playing Dutch.
"I have to give props to the boys," he noted. "They fought every second of every minute in both halves and didn’t give up. That’s something we didn’t have as a collective last year that we do very well now.
"The second half is where things started to pick up and we had some great opportunities," said Rankin. "I have to highlight Lucian (Krause’s) shot from outside the 18 that barely glinted off the post and out.
"These boys are just a step or two away from breaking through and doing something great," he added.
Rubin scored the first two goals of the game, then Brandon Espersen and Miles Gelbsmann each scored to give the Yellowjackets a 4-0 lead.
Rubin again scored consecutive goals to make it 6-0, and Hayden Teserio finished off the first-half scoring to extend the lead to 7-0.
Cameron Comstock scored the lone goal of the second half to provide the final margin.
Oneonta had an 18-1 advantage in shots-on-goal,, and a 14-0 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore James Cole had 11 saves in net for the Wolverines.
Waverly, now 0-4, returns to action Wednesday at Norwich, then hosts Windsor Friday on the high school field.
