Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Junior Maci Wheeler scored midway through the first half and the Waverly defense made it stand up in a 1-0 win over Norwich here Tuesday night in STAC girls soccer action.
"Learning from our feedback against Seton, we worked on two things this past week: possession and first touch," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. "There was a significant improvement with both those pieces.
"We had a lot of opportunities with the girls making those improvements," she noted. "Now, we need to move onto addressing our shot-to-goal ratio."
Waverly had a 27-9 advantage in shots-on-goal, and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
"Makenzie (Olmsted), Hannah (Carpenter), and Sophia Dorsey) had their hands full with speedy Norwich forwards," said Hogan.
"Maci (Wheeler) had a lot of opportunities," she noted. "I'm always telling her and Ryleigh Judson to go for those shots.
"Overall, we were very happy with the improvements the players made," Hogan added.
Wheeler scored an unassisted goal with 22:28 remaining in the first half, and the Wolverine defense made it stand for the final 62:28.
Sophomore Taylin Gonzalez recorded seven saves in net for the Wolverines.
Waverly, now 4-2, returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts Susquehanna Valley.
