TIOGA CENTER — Tioga kept the game close through the halftime intermission, but Vestal pulled away for an 8-0 win here Thursday afternoon in Section IV field hockey action.
"We had a great first half," said Tioga coach Aubrey Worthing. "We played as a team and made good connections with our passes.
"The second half showed our fatigue — the grass really got to us," she noted. "We played much more of a defensive second half and got stuck a lot in our half of the field.
"We have a big week coming up with some teams in our division, so we are looking to put this game behind us," added Worthing.
Elsa Hartman opened the scoring with the first of her two goals late in the first quarter, and Ava Lucenti scored two of her three goals in the second quarter to give the Bears a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
Allie Pollicare, Hartman and Lucenti scored goals in the third quarter to make it 6-0, and Pollicare, and Maggie Costello finished off the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Vestal had a 21-0 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 13-1 edge in penalty corners.
Vangie Decker and Paige Fenton combined for nine saves in the cage for the Tigers.
Tioga returns to action Tuesday at SVEC.
