WELLSBORO — Wellsboro scored the game's only goal with 15 minutes remaining in the first half, and made it stand to pull out a 1-0 win over Athens here Thursday afternoon in NTL boys soccer action.

"The boys gave everything they had in tonight’s loss," said acting Athens coach Colby Blakeman. "We saw constant effort all over the field to try and bring ourselves back into the game."

Coby Tomlinson scored with 15 minutes remaining in the first half after collecting a rebound off a save to give Wellsboro a 1-0 lead.

"We created scoring chances, but we were just unlucky with hitting the post and crossbar three times," said Blakeman. "We need to become a bigger threat in the final third and finish our chances."

Athens had a 4-3 edge in shots-on-goal, while Wellsboro had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"It was a solid performance out of the backline tonight," said Blakeman. "We didn’t give up many chances to our opponents and stayed strong as a unit.

"There was a lot of great communication out of them, especially our goalkeeper, which is what we love to see as coaches," added Blakeman.

Athens, now 5-2, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Williamson.
