Valley Sports ReportCONKLIN, N.Y. — Susquehanna Valley scored a pair of first-half goals, then padded its lead with a pair of second-half goals in a 4-0 win over Waverly here Monday night in STAC boys soccer action.
Collin Trotter and Sean Skinner scored goals in a 12-minute span late in the first half to give the Sabers a 2-0 lead with 3 minutes remaining.
Giano Lisi and Ethan Schappert added second-half goals.
"The boys played very well against one of the best teams in our conference," said Waverly coach Jon Rankin. "Susquehanna Valley is no slouch at soccer. They made great runs, played very physical, and made smart fouls to deny our offensive build.
"We lost Hayden Roskow early into the match due to a slide tackle and he ended up out for a good portion of the match," noted Rankin. "Losing someone that’s 6-1 and physical in the middle of the field makes contesting aerial balls tough. The boys made due and worked for everything tonight.
"Luckily we have players like Lucian Krause and Cohen Kraft who have silky smooth touches with the ball and great control over it," he said. "They came in big denting space and helping us to maintain shape in the middle-third of the field.
"Our defense played very, very well and James (Cole) made some amazing saves and interceptions. If he wasn’t as confident as he is coming off his line to deny the next pass, he would’ve faced a lot more shots," said Rankin. "The center-back pairing Collin Wheeler and Trent VanDyke has been a great help in denying through-balls in the middle and guiding our right and left backs to challenge and pressure.
"I’m proud of the boys and their performance tonight," added Rankin.
The Sabers, now 2-0, had a 12-5 advantage in shots-on-goal.
James Cole had eight saves in net for the Wolverines.
Waverly, now 1-6, returns to action Saturday at Chenango Forks.
