Valley Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER — Grace Howey scored four goals, including three in the first half, to help Tioga to a fast start in a 7-1 Senior Night win over Newark Valley here Tuesday afternoon in IAC South girls soccer action at Haggerty Field.
With the win, Tioga will host Odessa-Montour Thursday night in an IAC South Small School Divisional playoff game.
"This game sets us up nicely to take on division rival O-M on Thursday night for all the marbles," said Tioga coach Jim Walsh. "The winner plays Southern Cayuga in the IAC Small School championship on Saturday at TC3."
Walsh was happy for his seniors to get the win on Senior Night.
"It was a successful Senior Night at Haggerty Field, helped out by some younger teammates scoring most of the team’s goals, but senior Serenity Relyea capped the scoring with the team's final goal," said Tioga coach Jim Walsh.
"Senior captain Marcy Moniz put in another fine performance, this time around - both in and out of goal, and senior sweeper and stopper Amelia Toomey did her usual shut down job on defense.
"Rounding out our senior four is Skyla Jankowski, who, unfortunately, was unable to play because of a mid-season season-ending injury," added Walsh.
Natalie Kemp scored Tioga's first goal less than two minutes into the game, then Mary Van Dusen and Howey scored 95 seconds apart to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead with 26:36 remaining in the first half.
Howey scored goals 10 minutes apart to make it 5-1, which is where it stood at halftime, with 8:06 remaining in the half.
Howey scored her fourth goal about six minutes into the second half, and senior Serenity Relyea capped the scoring with 24:21 remaining in the contest.
Tioga had a 25-12 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Marcy Moniz recorded five goals in net for the Tigers, and Kaylah Nelson had six saves.
