ATHENS — The Athens boys had a rare down year in the NTL track & field circuit in 2014, but Athens coach David Gabriel believes the Wildcats are on the way back up.

“Two years ago, we had a ton of athletes across the board,” said Gabriel in reference to his NTL title team.

“Last year, we were extremely young. The majority of the team was freshman and sophomores and it’s kind of the same this year,” he said. “Those 9th- and 10th-graders are now 10th- and 11th-graders and we have a pretty good freshman class coming in. ...more

“A lot of our points last year came from the 9th- and 10th-grade classes, mainly the 9th-grade class, and all of those girls came back this year,” said Gambrell. “They were our top point-getters last year and we expect them to be really strong this year.”

UTICA, N.Y. — Waverly grad David Owen will be inducted into the Pioneer Hall of Fame here at Utica College May 13.

Owen, who was inducted into the Waverly High School Hall of Fame in 1996, was a four-year letterman in baseball and basketball at Utica College and was also a four-time team MVP in both sports.

Owen was also selected Utica College “Athlete of the Year” after his freshman season (1969-70) and his senior season (1972-73). ...more

TROY — The East, led by Towanda’s Noah Huff and Athens’ Brandon Fauver, raced out to a 14-point halftime lead en route to an 82-72 win over the West here Monday night in the NTL Seniors Game at the Troy Commons Building.

Huff knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 points and Fauver added 11 points, while Towanda’s Nick Place drained a trio of 3-pointers as the East took a 47-33 lead into the halftime locker room. (The game was played in two 20-minute halves.)

TROY — Instead of dividing the NTL seniors into teams by the old method — East vs. West — or the new one — Division 1 vs. Division 2, the powers-that-be in the NTL decided to try to even things out by choosing teams.

It worked perfectly as the White team — consisting of players from Troy, North-Penn Mansfield, Williamson and Wellsboro — pulled out a hard-fought, 45-42, win over the Black team, which fielded players from Athens, Wyalusing, Canton, Towanda and North Penn-Liberty. ...more
