CHOICE RADIO ANNOUNCES 2017 HIGH SCHOOL BROADCAST SCHEDULE (2017-08-07)

THE VALLEY — The Choice Sports (WATS / WAVR) broadcast team of Mike Miller and Bob Baker returns for another year of high school football coverage this fall with 10 games on the schedule.

Athens will be featured four times on Choice Sports, while Sayre will be featured in three games, and Waverly and Tioga will each be the main attraction twice.

The 2017 season opens on Aug. 25 when Wyalusing invades the Lockhart Street Bowl to take on the defending NTL Small School champion Sayre Redskins.

The season concludes on Oct. 27 with the annual “Rusty Rail” rivalry game between Athens and Sayre, which will be played at the Lockhart Street Bowl this season.

The complete 2017 schedule is as follows (in parenthesis is air time):

VERON, N.Y. — Sayre senior Ryan Murrelle had the strongest showing of the Valley contingent here at the two-day season-ending Central New York Junior PGA Tour Championship with a third-place finish in the 18U boys division on the Kaluhyat Golf Course at Turning Stone Casino.

SAYRE — In the spring of 1966, Jeff Terpko was the sophomore ace of the Sayre pitching staff, and Ralph Hendershot, fresh out of Wilkes College, was the new Redskin baseball coach.

Terpko would become the best player to ever don a Redskin baseball uniform, and Hendershot would become the longest-tenured (31 years) and winningest coach (more than 350 wins) in the program’s history. ...more

SAYRE — On June 2, 1977, Jeff Terpko walked off the mound at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium for what would be the final time in his Major League Baseball career.

Terpko played for parts of three seasons in the Majors — two for the Texas Rangers and one for the Montreal Expos. He pitched in 48 games, posting a 3-4 record with a 3.14 ERA in 80 1/3 career innings.

A school-record 145 Nittany Lion students, including Sayre grad Elyse Skerpon, from the spring / at-large sports boosted Penn State to 299 Academic All-Big Ten honorees in 2016-17, tying the mark set last year.
