THE VALLEY — For the second straight year, Tioga junior Sam Wood has earned the Valley Sports Report “Player of the Year” softball honors after playing a big part in the pitcher’s circle and batter’s box for the Lady Tigers’ in their trip to the Section IV, Class C championship game.
Wood was 13-3 on the mound for Tioga with an 0.87 ERA. She struck out 91 and walked just eight in 80 2/3 innings.
At the plate, Wood hit a team-high .564 (31 hits in 55 ABs) and walked 16 times for a team-high .855 on-base percentage. She also had a .782 slugging percentage and a 1.637 OPS.
Tioga freshman Mariah Culver made an immediate impact on the Lady Tiger offense and is the Valley Sports Report “Newcomer of the Year” recipient.
Culver hit .509 (28 hits in 55 ABs) and flashed immense power, including a three home run game. She walked 10 times for a .691 on-base percentage and was second on the team with a .945 slugging percentage and second on the team with a 1.636 OPS.
In limited action in the pitcher’s circle, she posted a 1.58 ERA in 13 1/3 innings pitched and fanned 24 with just five walks.
A slick-fielding shortstop with a strong arm and a high softball IQ, Waverly senior Kiana Manuel is the “Defensive Player of the Year.” She committed just three errors at the toughest position on the field.
Rookie Tioga coach Heather Klossner guided the Lady Tigers to a 14-4 record a berth in the Section IV, Class C Championships to earn “Coach of the Year” honors.

Kiana Manuel, senior, Waverly: A top-notch defender (see above), Manuel capped a brilliant five-year varsity career, hitting .569 with 37 hits, including 10 extra-base hits (six doubles, one triple and three home runs). She scored 23 runs, had 22 RBI and 13 stolen bases and had an .831 slugging percentage with a 1.447 OPS.
Jensen Dunkling, senior, Athens: A very versatile player, Dunkling hit .424 with 25 hits, including 11 extra-base hits. She had five home runs, four doubles, 14 RBI, 29 runs scored and 12 RBI with a .507 on-base percentage, and .814 on-base percentage and a 1.321 OPS.
Kaitlyn Cron, sophomore, Sayre: A good defensive third baseman, Cron hit .455 with 25 hits, including 12 extra-base hits (five doubles, five triples and two home runs), 13 RBI,c 13 runs scored and six steals. She also had an .836 slugging percentage and a 1.320 OPS.
Dani Barto, senior, Tioga: A great defender and fierce competitor, Barto hit .534 with 31 hits. She had a 1.000 slugging percentage, a .724 on-base percentage and an astounding 1.724 OPS.
Aubrey Allen, sophomore, Athens: A very good defender at third base, Allen hit .491 with 28 hits, including 12 extra-base hits (10 doubles). She also had 19 RBI, 20 runs scored and eight stolen bases.
In the pitcher’s circle, Allen posted a 2.40 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings.
Sam Mennig, senior, Waverly: Mennig had another outstanding in the pitcher’s circle, posting a 12-4 record and a 1.82 ERA. She struck out 131 and walked 29 in 100 innings of work, while allowing opponents to hit .216 against her.
At the plate, Mennig hit .343 (24 hits in 70 ABs) with seven extra-base hits, including four doubles and two home runs. She scored 15 runs and had 14 RBI.
2015 Valley Sports Report All-Valley team:
Catcher: Brittany Vergason, junior, Tioga: A top-notch defender and game-caller, Vergason hit .377 with 20 hits. She had a .566 on-base percentage and a .434 slugging percentage for a 1.000 OPS.
First Base: Rica Dimon, senior, Athens: A very good defender, Dimon hit .379 with 22 hits, including eight extra-base hits (four doubles and three triples), 16 RBI and 12 runs scores. She had a .413 on-base percentage and a .603 slugging percentage for a 1.016 OPS.
Second base: Shailei Kraft, sophomore, Waverly: A slick-fielding defender, Kraft hit .477 with 31 hits, including eight doubles. She also had 20 RBI, 20 runs scored, five steals and a 1.145 OPS.
Shortstop: Kiana Manuel, senior, Waverly: See above.
Third base: Dani Barto, senior, Tioga: See above.
Extra infielder: Kate Cron, sophomore, Sayre: See above.
Outfield: Kalie Herriman, junior, Waverly: A converted catcher, Herriman played an above-average center field for the Lady Wolverines. At the plate, she hit .344 with 15 runs scored, seven steals and five RBI.
Outfield: Paige Hendershot, senior, Tioga: A speedy center fielder with excellent range, Hendershot hit .340 and walked 13 times for a .617 on-base percentage. She also had a .426 slugging percentage for a 1.043 OPS.
Outfield: Mariah Culver, freshman, Tioga: See above.
Designated Hitter: Jensen Dunkling, senior, Athens: See above.
Utility Player: Paige Wampole, junior, Sayre: If you picked Wampole as All-Valley first base or outfield, there’s no argument — she played both at a high level. At the plate, Wampole hit .367 with 11 RBI and seven runs scored. She had a .446 on-base percentage, a .571 slugging percentage and a 1.018 OPS.
