THE VALLEY — Athens senior Zach Sitzman capped a stellar career with a District 4 title, earning the title of Valley Sports Report’s 2015-16 “Golfer of the Year.”

Meanwhile, Waverly 7th-grader Gabby Picco and Tioga freshman A.J. Middendorf share “Newcomer of the Year” honors.

Sitzman shot a 77 on the second day to win the District 4 Championships at the rugged Williamsport Country Club. He finished 23rd at Regionals.

Sitzman earned NTL “Player of the Year” honors with a scoring average of 76.0 — best in the NTL since 2010.

Gabby Picco, who finished sixth at the IAC Championships, was 10th at the Section IV Championships, losing in a playoff for the final spot on the State team. She carded two holes-in-one at the sectional match.

Gabby Picco ended up playing at States after a Section IV teammate withdrew, and finished 72nd at States with a two-day total of 210 (106-104).

Middendorf finished seventh at IAC Championships and was 12th at the Class C Championships.

MIddendorf shot a 92 in Day 1 of Section IV Individual Championships at Cornell’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course — missing the cut for Day 2 by two strokes.

Sam Taylor, 8th-grader, Tioga: Taylor was the runner-up at the IAC Small School Championships, leading the Tigers to a Small School title. He finished third at Class C Championships, and was sixth at Section IV Individual Championships with two-day total of 164 at Cornell’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course to qualify for States.

Taylor shot rounds of 82 and 84 at States to finish 59th.

Ryan Murrelle, sophomore, Sayre: Murrelle, who was third in scoring average (82.43) in the NTL during the regular season, placed fourth at the District 4 Championships and finished 15th at Regionals, missing a trip to the PIAA Championships in a three-hole playoff.

Capria Picco, sophomore, Waverly:
Capria Picco, who set the school record with a round of 38, finished second at the IAC Championships.

She won the Section IV Championships, winning a four-way playoff on the first hole, and finished 67th at the New York State Championships.

Alex Tomasso, freshman, Waverly: Tomasso, who set the school record with a 38, won the IAC Championships.

She finished second at the Section IV Championships (in a four-way playoff), and finished 51st at the New York State Championships.

A.J. Middendorf, freshman, Tioga: See above.

Gianna Picco, 8th-grader, Waverly: Gianna Picco finished seventh at the IAC Championships, and also finished seventh at Section IV Championships. She finished 70th at the New York State Championships.
