Valley Sports Report
THE VALLEY — Tioga senior Gage Lubertowicz finished fourth in the pole vault at States and was a major points-winner for the Tigers all season in earning the 2016 Valley Sports Report “Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year.”

Athens junior Kalen Keathley is the “Track & Athlete of the Year,” and Waverly 8th-grader Isaac Chandler was top “Newcomer of the Year.”

Lubertowicz, who entered his senior season with a career-best vault of 12-feet, 6-inches, peaked at the end of the season and cleared 14-feet, 6-inches to finish second (by virtue of fewest misses) to Waverly’s Josh Mastrantuono at the Section IV State Qualifier.

He cleared 14-feet, 3-inches at States to finish fourth — one spot behind Mastantuono (again via the fewer misses criteria) who also cleared 14-feet, 3-inches.

At the IAC Championships, Lubertoiwicz won the pole vault, was third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. At the Class C meet, he finished second in the pole vault and long jump, and ran on a pair of relays that placed.

He graduates as the school record-holder in the pole vault at 14-feet, 6-inches.

Keathley consistently won points for the Wildcats this season, regularly winning three or four events.

He was a triple-winner at the NTL Championships, and won a pair of silver medals (100- and 200-meter dashes) at the District 4 Championships, while also running on the third-place 400-meter relay.

Chandler placed in three events at the IAC Divisional meet — winning the 110-meter hurdles and long jump, and finishing third in the pole vault. He finished sixth in the long jump at the Class B meet.

Relay of Year:  The Athens 400-meter relay team of Keathley, sophomore Brandon Hunsinger, and juniors Ben Vosburg and Payton Lewis finished third at the District 4 Meet in a time of 44.64 seconds.
