THE VALLEY — Athens freshman Rachel Hutchison qualified for States in the 400-meter dash and also ran on a PIAA medal-winning relay team, earning the Valley Sports Report “Female Newcomer of the Spring.”

Hutchison burst onto the scene and was an immediate contributor for the Lady Wildcats in their NTL championship season, regularly winning three or four events. She placed in four events at NTL Championships, including a pair of first-place finishes

Hutchison finished third in the 400-meter dash at the District 4 Championship and hit state standard to qualify for the PIAA Championships. She was also a part of the gold-medal winning 400-meter relay team.

She finished fifth in her 400-meter heat at States and was on the record-setting 400-meter relay team that finished fifth at States.

Emma Adams, freshman, Athens: Adams had an immediate impact in the pitcher’s circle and at the plate for the Lady Wildcats. She hit .494 (39 hits in 79 at-bats) with seven doubles, one home run, 11 RBI, 20 runs and 14 stolen bases.

In the pitcher’s circle, Adams had a 7-5 record with a 2.38 ERA. She allowed 73 hits and walked 27 in 85 1/3 innings, while striking out 59.

Offensively, Hammond hit .348 on the season (24 hits in 69 ABs) with two doubles and two triples, and five RBI. She scored 26 runs and stole 10 bases.

Gabby Picco, 7th-grader, Waverly: Picco, who finished sixth at the IAC Championships, was 10th at the Section IV Championships, losing in a playoff for the final spot on the State team. Incredibly, she carded two holes-in-one at the Section IV match.

Picco ended up playing at States after a Section IV teammate withdrew, and finished 72nd with a two-day total of 210 (106-104).

Ariana Gambrell, freshman, Athens: Gambrell made an immediate impact for the Lady Wildcats, consistently earning points in four events during the team’s NTL Championship season.

Gambrell finished third in the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump, and was sixth in the triple jump at the NTL Championships. She ran on the first-place 400-meter relay teams at the District 4 Championships, and also finished seventh in 100-meter hurdles, and eighth in the long jump.

The 400 relay team went on to finish fifth at States, setting a new school record of 49.18 seconds in the process.

Sara Strong, sophomore, Tioga: An athletic defender in center field, Strong hit .333 (20 hits in 60 ABs) with 22 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Hayleigh Macik, freshman, Athens: A strong defensive presence behind the plate, Macik committed just two errors in 96 defensive chances for a .979 fielding percentage. She hit .315 (17 hits in 54 ABs) with one double, one triple, four runs scored and 17 RBI.
