WAVERLY — Waverly swept a doubleheader against Candor here Friday afternoon in IAC modified softball action to improve to 7-3 on the season.
Waverly 10, Candor 8
Candor scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but Waverly rallied to pull out a 10-8 decision in the first of two five-inning games.
It was a back-and-forth affair as Waverly scored twice in the first inning and five times in the bottom of the second to take a 7-5 lead, but Candor scored three times in the third to pull back ahead, 8-7.
The junior Lady Wolverines answered with three runs in the bottom of the third for a 10-8 lead, and made it stand.
The game ended on a close play at the plate. Center fielder Aubrey Ennis fielded a single and hit the cut-off third baseman Emilee Little, who relayed the ball home to Kylie Payne. See then applied the game-ending tag on the Candor runner at the plate.
Maddy Goodwin stroked an RBI single, and scored three runs, and Aubrey Ennis belted an RBI double, and scored twice to lead Waverly at the plate, while Kennedy Herriman added an RBI single.
Megan Ward struck out five in five innings to earn the win in the pitcher’s circle for Waverly.
Waverly 23, Candor 12
Waverly, the visiting team in the nightcap, which was a make-up of a rained-out game in Candor earlier this season, erupted for 13 runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open a close game in a 23-12 win.
Little stroked three singles, scored four runs, and had three RBI to lead Waverly at the plate, while Ennis doubled and singled, scored three runs, and drove in two runs, and Goodwin doubled and singled, and scored four runs.
Ward singled and scored four runs in the win, while Caitlin Bakley singled twice and scored one run, and Taylor Hall belted an RBI double.
Ward struck out four in five innings to earn the win.
The game also featured strong defensive play by Waverly with Goodwin making “a great play on a line drive at shortstop,” Hall throwing out two base-runners from right field, and Bakley recording three assists playing second base.
