|NTL BASEBALL: ATHENS' JENNINGS EARNS TOP POSTSEASON LEAGUE HONORS — SAYRE'S HANAFIN TABBED TOP NEWCOMER (2017-06-15)

THE VALLEY — NTL division champs Athens and Sayre dominated the league’s all-star teams, led by Wildcat senior Cody Jennings, who earned “Player of the Year” and “Pitcher of the Year” honors.
Sayre freshman Quinn Hanafin was named the “Newcomer of the Year,” and Jon Pack and his coaching staff at Sayre was voted “Coaching Staff of the Year.”
Athens and Sayre each had three first-team all-stars, while the Redskins had three players receive second-team nods, and the Wildcats had one.
On the mound, Jennings was 6-0 with a 1.07 ERA. He fanned 64 and walked just 12, while allowing only 25 hits in 42 innings pitched. Opposing batters hit just .159 against him.
At the plate, Jennings had a breakout season. He hit .588 with 40 hits in 68 at-bats, including nine doubles, one triple, and one home run. He had 24 RBI, scored 21 runs, stole 11 bases, and struck out just three times in 75 plate appearances.
Quinn Hanafin hit .464 with 32 hits in 69 at-bats, including 10 doubles. He had 27 RBI, scored 20 runs, and struck out just 7 times in 74 plate appearances.
Pack, along with assistant coaches Kyle Raupers, Mike Cron, and Jamie VanDuzer, guided the Redskins to their second consecutive Small School title, and the program’s first District 4 title since 2010.

Nate Sweet, junior Sayre: A strong-armed catcher and a top-notch game-caller, Sweet hit .449 with 31 hits in 69 at-bats, including nine doubles and one home run. He had 20 RBI, scored 17 runs, and struck out just three times in 80 plate appearances.
Connor Hanafin, junior Sayre: A good defender at the hot corner, Hanafin hit .500 on the season with 33 hits, including nine doubles, two triples, and one home run. He had 31 RBI, scored 20 runs, and struck out just five times in 79 plate appearances.
Cory Stivason, junior, Athens: A center fielder with a great deal of range, Stivason hit . 393 on the season with 24 hits in 61 at-bats, including eight doubles and one triple. He scored 22 runs, had 19 RBI, and stole 13 bases.
Jordan Rockwell, junior, Sayre: Rockwell posted a 1.30 ERA on the season, striking out 47 and walking just 15 in 48 1/3 innings on the mound. He allowed 43 hits.
At the plate, Rockwell hit .414 with 29 hits, including two doubles. He scored 26 runs, and had 11 RBI.
Matt Collins, senior, Athens: Collins posted a 4-1 record on the mound with a 3.46 ERA. He allowed 23 hits in 26 innings pitched, while striking out 31 and walking 13. Opponents hit .228 against him on the season.
A strong defender in right field, Collins hit .296 with 16 hits in 54 ABs, including three doubles. He scored 15 runs, and had six RBI.
Others receiving first-team honors are: Dalton Prough and Johnny Rowland of Wellsboro; Carl Dinger, Kipp Hillson, and Logan Adams of North Penn-Mansfield; Chase Austin of Williamson; Brendon Landis of Canton; Tyler Williams of Troy; and Nate Watkins of NEB.
Sam Wheeler, senior, Sayre: A slick-fielding second baseman, Wheeler hit .388 with 26 hits in 67 at-bats, including two doubles and a triple. He scored 24 runs, and had nine RBI.
Daniel Joyce, senior, Athens: A strong defender behind the plate, Joyce hit .365 with 19 hits in 52 at-bats, including six doubles and one triple. He had 12 RBI and scored five runs.
Matt Williams, senior, Sayre: A dynamic fielder at first base, Williams battled a foot injury for part of the season, but still hit .450 with 18 hits (and 15 walks) in 40 at-bats, including two doubles. He also scored 14 runs, and had 13 RBI.

Also earning second team honors were: Dylan Williamson and Joel Whitteker of NP-Mansfield; Lars Thomason and Ryan Bartholomew of Towanda; Holdan Hitchcock of Wyalusing; Christian Kemp and Caleb Fitzwater-Cowanesque Valley; Carson Davis of Wellsboro; Brock Sackett of Williamson; and Roland Pythila of NEB.
