NEW BERLIN, Pa. — Sayre scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning here Thursday afternoon to pull out a 10-7 win over Keystone in the completion of Wednesday’s game, which was suspended after nine innings, then dropped an 11-6 decision to Selinsgrove in the winner’s bracket finals of the Section 3 Junior Division baseball playoffs.
Sayre will square off with Keystone again Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the consolation bracket finals of the double-elimination tournament.
Sayre 10, Keystone 7, 10 innings
On Wednesday, David Northrop rapped an RBI double, and Jake Bennett stroked an RBI single in a three-run second-inning rally to give Sayre a 3-1 lead.
Keystone responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-3 lead,
Sayre knotted the score at 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Isiah Firestone, but Keystone again answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-4 lead.
Bennett was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the seventh, then Brayden Horton followed with a single, and Kyle Setzer worked a walk to load the bases.
Firestine drew a walk to force home the first run of the inning, then a fielder’s choice off the bat of Camden Wheeler drove home another run to trim the deficit to 7-6.
Zach Moore tied the game with an RBI single, but Sayre left runners stranded at second and third.
The biggest threat in extra innings saw Keystone leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning.
In the top of the 10th inning, Dom Fabbri worked a walk, Bennett ripped a double, and Horton drew a walk to load the bases. Setzer gave Sayre an 8-7 lead with a sacrifice fly, then Firestine was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases.
Wheeler stroked an RBI single to make it 9-7, and Moore added another insurance run with a sacrifice fly.
Fabbri pitched around a walk in the bottom of the 10th to preserve the win.
Bennett doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run, and Burgess singled twice and scored two runs to lead Sayre at the plate, while Setzer singled twice and drove in a run, and Northrup doubled, scored two run, and knocked in a run.
Firestine singled and drove in two runs in the win, while Horton singled and scored two runs, Moore and Wheeler each singled and drove in two runs, and Mason Houseknecht singled and scored a run/
Winner's Bracket Finals
Selinsgrove 11, Sayre 6
Selinsgrove jumped out to an 8-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings en route to an 11-6 win over Sayre Thursday night.
After Selinsgrove scored two runs in the top of the first inning, Jake Burgess worked a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the frame to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Selinsgrove scored three runs in the top of the third inning, and three more in the fourth to extend their lead to 8-1.
Sayre scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, then two more in the sixth on an RBI double by Northrup, and a groundout off the bat of Horton to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Selinsgrove put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with three runs to make it 11-4.
Firestine singled twice and scored two runs, and Setzer singled twice to lead Sayre at the plate, while Moore singled, scored a run, and drove in a run, Northrup doubled, scored a run, and drove in a run, and Houseknecht doubled and scored a run.
Horton singled and scored a run for Sayre, while Bennett singled, and Burgess and Fabbri each drove in a run.
