PLAINVILLE, Mass. — The Conklin Raiders Gold 18U travel softball team continued its torrid play here Friday and Saturday in pool play with three consecutive wins at the New England’s Finest Showcase.
The Raiders Gold, who went 9-0 in winning the Tom Doyle Invitational in Toms River, N.J. last weekend, have won 12 consecutive decisions and feature a quartet of Valley standouts in Waverly’s Wendi Hammond and Shailei Kraft, Athens’ Emma Adams, and Tioga’s Mariah Culver.
Raiders Gold 4, Rhode Island Thunder Gold 1
Hammond starred at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle in the Gold’s 4-1 win over the Rhode Island Thunder Gold in the opening game of pool play Friday evening.
Hammond homered and singled, scored one run, and had two RBI at the plate, while Culver singled, stole two bases, and scored a run, and Kraft added a single.
Hammond earned the win, allowing one run on four hits in four innings of work. She struck out one and walked none.
Binghamton’s Paige Rauch pitched two perfect innings of relief to record the save.
Raiders Gold 11, N.J. Heist 0
Hammond and Culver combined on a no-hitter to lead the Raiders Gold to an 11-0 win over New Jersey Heist Saturday morning.
Hammond retired all nine batters she faced to earn the win. Culver struck out two and walked one in two innings of hitless relief.
Rauch homered, scored three runs, and had four RBI, and Kraft ripped a pair of doubles and drove in one run to pace the Raiders at the plate, while Hammond tripled, scored one run, and had three RBI, Culver doubled and singled, scored one run, and drove in a run, and Adams added a single.
Raiders Gold 1, Jersey Inferno 0, 7 innings
The Raiders managed just six hits, but it was enough behind a strong effort in the pitcher’s circle to edge Jersey Inferno, 1-0, Saturday afternoon.
Rauch, who struck out five in four innings of one-hit relief to earn the win, singled home Hammond with the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Hammond stroked three singles, stole a base, and stole a base, and Kraft singled and stole a base.
