LERAYSVILLE — Northeast Bradford built a 5-0 lead midway through the second half, then held on after Sayre tallied four goals — all by senior Jordan Rockwell — in an 8 1/2-minute span, for a 6-4 win here Wednesday afternoon in NTL boys soccer action.
The loss drops Sayre to 7-10 and puts an end to their postseason hopes.
“We put ourselves in a deep hole and nearly dug ourselves out,” said Sayre coach Randy Rockwell. “I'm proud of this team for battling until the end.
“Jordan (Rockwell) and Sam (Wheeler) played like true leaders tonight and nearly brought us all the way back , but we came up a little short,” noted Rockwell.
“They knew what was on the line, and left it all on the field,” he added.
Collin Cowles and Maxon Cooper scored first-half goals to give NEB a 2-0 lead at the intermission.
Spencer Jackson scored six minutes into the second half, and Charles LaBarre and Ben Anderson added goals to make it 5-0 with 17 minutes remaining in the contest.
With 16 minutes remaining in the game, senior Sam Wheeler was dragged down in the box, and Rockwell converted the resulting penalty kick to put the Redskins on the board.
Rockwell scored twice in the next two minutes, both off assists from Wheeler, to trim the deficit to 5-3.
Rockwell scored again with 7 1/2 minutes remaining, this time off an assist from senior Chris Harris to pull the Redskins within a goal, at 5-4.
Sayre pushed everybody up into the offensive end in an effort to tie the game, and NEB’s Jude Jampo took advantage, getting behind the defense with 3 minutes left in the contest to tally an insurance goal for the final margin.
Sophomore Camden Wheeler had 10 saves for Sayre and Braeden Frisbie had 11 for NEB . Both teams took 5 corners.
