NEW YORK STATE GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY'S ORTIZ EARNS FOURTH-TEAM CLASS B ALL-STATE HONORS (2017-12-04)

WAVERLY — Waverly sophomore Melina Ortiz has been named an all-state performer on the New York State Sportswriters & Coaches all-state girls soccer teams.

Ortiz, who was an integral part of Waverly’s second consecutive trip to the Section IV, Class B championship game. was a fourth-team selection in Class B.

A tremendous all-around player with great foot skills, blazing speed, a strong leg, and a deep understanding of the game, Ortiz was a force in the midfield She scored 15 goals and doled out 17 assists this season.

Chenango Forks, which beat Waverly in the Class B finals again, had three players honored, led by first-team selection Emma Baugh.

Notre Dame also had three players honored in Class C, paced by first-team selection Laurel Vargas.

Jillian Perrault was named to the second team, and Taylor Gray was a third-team pick.
