COLLEGE WRESTLING: ATHENS GRAD WINTERS FINISHES THIRD AT CITRUS OPEN (2018-01-02)

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Athens grad Kaidon Winters, a freshman on the RIT wrestling team went 4-1 over the weekend to finish third here at the 2017 Citrus Open.
 
Winters, now 23-5 on the season, opened the tournament with a pin of Augsburg’s Josh Verboten in 1:41 in their 157-pound match-up.

In the round-of-8, Winters forged an 8-0 major decision over Nic Jarvis of Cornell College.

In the semifinals, top-seed Ryan Epps knocked Winters into the consolation bracket with a 7-1 decision. Epps went on to win the 157-pound title.

Winters bounced back with a hard-fought, 3-0, decision over UNC-Pembroke’s Tyler Makosky in the consolation finals.

In the third-place bout, Winters forged a 7-2 decision over New York University’s Raymond Jazikoff.

Augsburg won the team title, while RIT finished sixth.

RIT, 2-3 in duals, returns to action Saturday at the N.Y. / Pa. Duals at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre. The Tigers will square off with Lycoming College at 1 p.m. and King’s College at 2:30 p.m.
