|IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY RIDES FIRST-HALF BLITZ IN 83-31 ROUT OF S-VE (24 PHOTOS) (2018-01-09)

WAVERLY State-ranked Waverly closed out the first half with a 31-9 blitz, then kept it rolling in the second half in an 83-31 rout of S-VE here Tuesday night in IAC girls basketball action.
Senior Elle Nittinger, who scored 17 points in the first quarter, opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, but S-VEs Jamie Sayre, Tara Perkins and Mackenzie Grube scored consecutive buckets to give the Lady Panthers a 6-3 lead.
Nittinger scored the next 12 points, capping the run with back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 15-6 with 2:42 left in the first quarter.
The Lady Panthers scored the next five points to trim the deficit to 15-11, Waverly on buckets by senior Paige Miller, Nittinger, and junior Alex Tomasso closed out the stanza with a 6-0 spurt to take a 21-11 lead.
Sidney Tomasso opened the second-quarter scoring with a short jumper in the lane to gave Waverly a 23-11 lead.
After a 3-pointer by senior Ari Blaasch cut the lead to 23-14, senior Zoe Mennig scored back-to-back buckets to spark a 23-5 blitz to end the first half.
Alex Tomasso canned a trio of 3-pointers, and scored 11 points as Waverly stretched its lead to 46-19 at the halftime intermission.
Nittinger pumped in 30 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Waverly, while Alex Tomasso scored 28 points, including three 3-pointers, Sidney Tomasso had nine points, Mennig had seven points, Miller had six points, senior Marissa Trudeau added five points, and junior Wendi Hammond chipped in with four points.
Blaasch led S-VE with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Madi Sousa scored seven points, Perkins added six points, and sophomore Paige Grube chipped in with five points.
Waverly, now 10-0 and ranked 15th in Class B, returns to action at Newfield, while S-VE, now 6-4, hosts Newark Valley.
