|IAC WRESTLING: SVEC ADVANCES SIX, WAVERLY TWO INTO SEMIFINALS AT WATSON INVITATIONAL (2018-01-12)

WATKINS GLEN — S-VE advanced six wrestlers, and Waverly advanced two into the semifinals of the annual Mike Watson Invitational here Friday night at the Watkins Glen Fieldhouse.
Seniors Bryant Sexton and Grady Alpert, juniors Kyle Jelliff and Mark Mullen, freshman Parker Sexton, and 8th-grader Hunter Cleveland will open action for the Panthers Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the semifinals, while sophomore Ethan Stotler, and 8th-grader Garrett Skeens will represent Waverly.
The following are results by weight class:
99 pounds: Skeens won his only bout of the day in a 50-second pin of M-E’s Payton Bennett. He will face Danville’s Landon Hopper in the semifinals.
SVEC sophomore Kamren Lehman, who lost in the quarterfinals, eliminated Waverly 7th-grader Connor Stotler by fall in 4:57 in the consolation bracket. Lehman was eliminated by Bennett in a second-period fall.
113 pounds: Cleveland edged Waverly sophomore Rylan LaForest, 7-4, to advance to the semifinals. He will face Whitney Point’s Aiden Rosa for a trip to the finals.
Laforest won via a 90-second fall over O-M’s Thomas Rumpil in the wrestlebacks, before dropping a 6-2 decision to Watkins Glen’s Dawson Wade.
120 pounds: Parker Sexton advanced to the semifinals with a pin of teammate Jamaal Horyzun in 5:01 in the opening round, and a 15-0 technical fall win over 8th-grade teammate Devin Beach in the quarterfinals.
Parker Sexton will square off with Elmira’s Ryan Mahon in the semis.
Beach advanced to the quarterfinals with pin of Whitney Point’s Alex Barnhart in 4:12, and won his first wrestleback match with a fall of Watkins Glen’s Alexis Shea in 2:12, before being eliminated by Chenango Valley’s Dan Tester.
Waverly freshman Gaven Anthony, Sayre freshman Mia Lehman, and Horyzun each went 0-2 on the day.
126 pounds: SVEC’s Anthony O’Connor, who lost his first match of the day, pinned Danville’s Nick Ressle in 2:48 to advance to the consolation semifinals.
SVEC’s Morgan Meyers is in the other consolation semifinals. Meyers, who also lost his first match, edged Elmira’s Brice Arnold, 7-6, in wrestlebacks.
132 pounds: Bryant Sexton, and Stotler will square off in the semifinals.
Sexton pinned Elmira’s Alex Johnson in 2:26 in the quarterfinals, while Stotler decked Vestal’s Josh Kilpatrick in 62 seconds.
Sayre’s Bobby Benjamin went 0-2.
138 pounds: SVEC junior Alex Morse dropped his first match, but won two bouts in wrestlebacks to advance to the consolation semifinals.
Morse pinned M-E’s Cobe Sisserstein in 4:35 in his first consolation bout, then pinned Sayre’s Thomas Hendricks in 1:46.
Hendricks won his first consolation bout via fall in 3:24 over Edison’s Mike Condon.
Waverly’s Cody Chandler won his first consolation bracket match via fall over Elmira’s Tai Wright, before losing via pinfall to Danville’s Kaiden Kurzawa.
145 pounds: SVEC junior Kyle Jelliff pinned a pair of opponents to advance to the semifinals. He decked O-M’s Josh Beckley in 1:15, then pinned South Seneca’s Thomas Lapp in 3:40 to reach the final four.
Jelliff will face Whitney Point’s Weston Underwood in the semifinals.
Waverly freshman Austin Kimble won his first wrestleback match via a 44-second fall over O-M’s Rilee Kuparinen, before losing by fall to Lapp.
152 pounds: SVEC’s Igor Leal and R.J. Giannino, and Sayre’s Zaine Patnode each won their first wrestleback match before bowing out with a loss.
Leal pinned Evan Foster in 59 seconds, before losing by fall in 59 seconds to O-M’s Jake Zimmer.
Patnode pinned SVEC’s Carmin DePrimo in 2:32, before losing by fall in 1:53 to M-E’s Anthony Bonnano.
Giannino pinned Waverly’s Austin Snyder in 30 seconds, before losing by fall to Danville’s Joey Harris.
160 pounds: Mullen pinned Edison’s Alex Aversion in 1:15, then edged Elmira’s Garret Adriene, 4-3 to advance to the semifinals.
Mullen will face O-M’s Jeremiah Lynch in the semifinals.
SVEC’s Evan Barnett pinned Sayre’s Connor Harbst in 1:25 in the opening round of wrestlebacks, but lost a 13-0 major decision to Adrienne in his next bout.
Waverly’s Trevor Meyers went 0-2.
170 pounds: SVEC senior Grady Alpert received a bye into the semifinals.
SVEC’s Kevin Dobbell and Nick Uhler each lost their opening bout, and are alive in the consolation semifinals.
182 pounds: SVEC’s Taylor Frye pinned Edison’s Jon Shirley in 1:21, but lost via first-period pinfall to top-seed Todd DeGroat of Vestal.
SVEC’s Jacob Campolito eliminated Frye via fall in 1:57 to advance to the consolation semifinals.
195 pounds: SVEC junior Mandell Davis went 0-2.
285 pounds: Sayre junior Dominic Red lost his opening match, and is alive in the consolation semifinals.
