WAVERLY ó Candor used a 13-3 fourth-quarter run to pull away from Waverly in a 54-40 win here Friday night in IAC junior varsity girls basketball action.
The loss forces Waverly into a Large School Divisional playoff game tonight at Watkins Glen at 5:30 p.m.
"It was a four-point game entering the fourth quarter," said Waverly coach Michael Croft. "We just hit a wall, and couldnít hit a bucket.
"I donít know if fatigue set in from playing two nights in a row.
"With that being said, one week ago, we hoped to play Watkins Glen one more time and we get that opportunity Monday night," added Croft. "This time it's for a division title.:
Elijah Kraft and Peyton Bowen scored four points apiece in the first quarter, and Ryan Lambert added a 3-pointer for Waverly, but Candor led 13-11 after the first eight minutes.
The second quarter was a shootout with Candor holding an 18-16 edge to take a 31-27 lead into the halftime intermission. Bowen, Dylan Streeter, and Jalen McCarty, who canned a 3-pointers, had four points apiece in the stanza.
Caden Hollywood knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points, and Thomas Price added a 3-pointer, but Candor maintained a four-point lead, at 41-37, heading into the final eight minutes.
Bowen led Waverly eight eight points, five steals, four rebounds, and three assists, while Kraft scored six points, and grabbed eight rebounds, and Streeter had six points and three boards.
Hollywood and McCarty scored five points apiece for the junior Wolverines, and Kobe Decker chipped in with four points and four rebounds.
