IAC BASEBALL: S-VE KNOCKS OFF NEWARK VALLEY, 7-1 (2018-04-11)

NEWARK VALLEY  Junior Billy Baker tossed a two-hitter to lead S-VE to a 7-1 win over Newark Valley here Wednesday afternoon in IAC baseball action.

Baker allowed an unearned run in the first inning, then shut the Cardinals out over the final six innings. He fanned eight, and walked three.

Senior Zach Sherwood led off the game for the Panther by reaching on a dropped third strike, and moved to third base on a line-drive single up the middle by junior Mandell Davis. The duo then pulled off a double steal to give S-VE a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals answered with a run in the home half of the first inning when Kyle Coffin reached on a lead-off error, stole second, and scored on a one-out groundout off the bat of Joey Woodmansee.

S-VE left two runners on base in the second and third innings, before finally breaking through in the fourth inning with three runs to take a 4-1 lead.

Senior Bryant Sexton led off the inning with a single to right field, and ended up on third base after an infield error that resulted in senior Jacob Butcher reaching second base.

After a walk to Sherwood, Davis worked a walk to force home a run to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. With one out, the Panthers took a 3-1 lead on an RBI groundout off the bat of senior Ryan Nelson. S-VE capped the rally when Sherwood scampered home on a dropped third strike.

Sherwood belted a one-out RBI double to plate senior Max Morais, who led off the top of the fifth inning with a single, to give S-VE a 5-1 lead.

The Panthers added a pair of unearned insurance runs in the seventh inning to provide the final margin.

Sexton doubled and singled, and scored two runs to lead S-VE at the plate, while Sherwood doubled, stole two bases, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Davis singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run.

Morais singled and scored in the win, and senior Jacob Grier singled and knocked in a run.

S-VE, now 2-2, returns to action Saturday.
