ATHENS — Wellsboro jumped out to an early five-run lead, and cruised to a 7-1 win over Athens here Wednesday afternoon in NTL Large School softball action.
Sophomore Cathryn Brought’s two-run double highlighted a three-run first inning for the Lady Hornets, and senior Sydney Tremper’s RBI single drove in the second run of the second inning to extend their lead to 5-0.
Athens got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Hayleigh Macik worked a walk to lead off the frame, and advanced to third base on a one-hop single off the right fence by freshman Harley Sullivan.
Moments later, Sullivan was thrown out attempting to steal second, but Macik was able beat the throw home to score Athens’ only run.
Brought helped her own cause again in the sixth inning with a two-run triple to the left field fence to make it 7-1.
Brought allowed one run on three hits, while striking out 11 and walking four in a complete-game seven-inning performance.
Freshman Megan Collins doubled, and freshmen Emma Repsher, and Sullivan each singled to account for Athens’ three hits.
Sophomore Megan Bennett was tagged with the loss, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits in six innings. She fanned six and walked one.
Athens, now 0-2, returns to action Friday when it hosts Wyalusing.
