WAVERLY — With everyone back from last year’s team, Tioga’s goal is to win a Section IV title.
The Tigers took the first step here Wednesday afternoon by shooting a 38-over par 223 on the par-37 front nine at the The Club at Shepard Hills to beat short-handed Waverly, and qualify for the Class C Championships.
To qualify, a Class C team must shoot 40-over par or better on a course other than their home course.
Two-time state qualifier sophomore Sam Taylor shot a 1-under par 36 to lead Tioga. Taylor birdied all three of the par-5s, and nearly birdied the par-3 third hole, but his second shot hit the pin, and dropped next to the cup for a tap-in par.
Senior Jake Robertson shot a 43 for the Tigers, and juniors A.J. Middendorf and Jaycob Maciak shot matching rounds of 45. Middendorf and Mayciak each birdied the par-5 fifth hole.
Junior Ben Coddington carded a non-scoring round of 54, and senior Randy Campbell tacked on a 57.
Waverly, which had just four golfers in action this afternoon, was led by 8th-grader Jack Knight, who shot a career-best round of 56.
Eighth-graders Hunter Elston, and Liam Traub shot 58 and 60, respectively, for the Wolverines, and freshman Ethan Williams added a 79.
Waverly returns to action Friday against S-VE at Catatonk Golf Course, while Tioga travels to Newark Valley.
