WAVERLY — Junior Wendi Hammond pitched a perfect game here Thursday afternoon to lead Waverly to a 15-0 six-inning win over Section III’s Vernon-Verona-Sherrill in non-league softball action.

Hammond struck out 15 of the 18 batters she faced, including the first 10, and did not allow a ball to be hit out of the infield. She threw just 74 pitches.

“It was a great pitching performance, she was really dominant,” said second-year coach Brian Wendela.

“When our offense puts runs on the scoreboard, it’s nice knowing you have someone like Wendi pitching at a top level,” he said.

“It's also nice going into big games knowing you have a girl like Wendi on the mound, she puts in a lot of hard work behind closed doors 365 days a year, and her hard work is paying off,” added Wendela. “She wants the ball in her hand at all times and she is always ready to compete.”

Sophomore Riley Hall provided two big hits early in the game to get the Lady Wolverine offense rolling.

With one out in the home half of the first inning, senior Paige Miller grounded a single into left field, and scored two pitches later when Hall ripped an RBI double into the right-center field gap to make it 1-0.

In the second inning, Hall slammed a three-run double to right field to cap a six-run rally that gave the Lady Wolverines a 7-0 lead.

Sophomore Morgan Adams delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to invoke the 15-run “mercy” rule.

Hall doubled twice, scored one run, and had four RBI, and Mennig doubled twice, scored two runs, and drove in a run to lead Waverly’s 11-hit attack, while Miller singled, scored three runs, and had two RBI, and Hammond singled, scored twice, and had two RBI.

Freshman Alyssa Sindoni singled and scored two runs in the win, while sophomore Paige Lewis and junior Jordan Mente each singled and scored a run, junior Sydney Meyers added a single, and freshman Hali Jenner scored two runs.

Waverly, now 4-0, returns to action Friday at Notre Dame.
