WAVERLY — Waverly scored six runs to blow open a tie game on its way to a come-from-behind, 13-7, win over O-M / Watkins Glen here Thursday afternoon in IAC South Large School Division baseball action.
The Seneca Indians took advantage of three two-out Waverly errors in the third inning to get on the board. Johnny Neidermaier stroked a bases-loaded RBI single to center field to make it 2-0, but Waverly junior center fielder Colby Sindoni gunned down a runner at the plate to end the inning.
The Wolverines answered with two runs in the home half of the second inning to tie the game. With one out, senior Mike Shaffer singled, took second on a balk, and advanced to third base on a single by sophomore Jalen McCarty.
Waverly trimmed the deficit to 2-1 when McCarty stole second, and the throw skipped into the outfield, allowing Shaffer to score. Moments later, Cole Jenner lined an RBI single to center field to tie the game at 2-2.
Another Waverly error set the stage for another big inning in the third for the Seneca Indians. Following a one-out error, O-M / WG hit three consecutive singles, capped by a two-run single by Caleb Thomas to make it 6-2.
After scoring a run in the fourth to trim the deficit to 6-3, the Wolverines scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead. The rally featured RBI singles by Jenner, senior Chandler Whitmarsh, and McCarty, and a sacrifice fly by junior Montana Davis.
O-M / WG tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Wolverines pulled away with six runs in the home half of the inning.
Senior Jason Morales was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then Jenner walked, and Davis singled to load the bases.
Whitmarsh cleared the bases with a single, and scored moments later on an RBI double by sophomore Ethan Stotler to make it 11-7. Sophomore Scotty Woodring stroked a line-drive RBI single to right field to make it 12-7, and later in the inning scored on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Sindoni.
Woodring singled three times, scored one run, and drive in a run, and Whitmarsh singled twice, scored twice, and had four RBI to pace Waverly’s 16-hit attack, while Jenner singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, and Sindoni singled twice, scored one run, and knocked in a run.
McCarty singled twice, scored one run, and drove in a run for the Wolverines, while Morales singled and scored two runs, Stotler doubled, scored one run, and drove in a run, senior Eithan McEnulty doubled and scored a run, and Shaffer, and Davis each singled, scored one run, and drove in a run.
