FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Waverly sits in fourth place after Day 1 of the first-ever New York State girls golf team championships here Saturday afternoon on the Yellow Course at Bethpage State Park, and junior Alex Tomasso is tied for 30th in the individual standings.

The Lady Wolverines shot a four-player aggregate score of 357, just one stroke out of third place, and eight strokes behind the second-place team. Section 1’s Carmel is the clubhouse leader at 335.

Alex Tomasso paced Waverly’s efforts with an 86, while sophomore Gianna Picco is tied for 38th in the individual standings after a round off 88, senior Capria Picco is tied for 51st with a 91, and freshman Sidney Tomasso is in 56th place with a 92. Senior Madison Kittle tacked on a non-scoring round of 106.

The Tomasso sisters and Picco sisters are also competing on the Section IV team, which is in fifth place with a seven-player aggregate score of 611. Section I is the Day 1 lead with a 548.

Unadilla Valley 7th-grader Bailey Shoemaker, who is in sixth place in the individual standings, led the Section IV team with a 76. Horseheads’ Emily Cunningham shot an 88, while Watkins Glen’s Hanley Elliott carded a 91, and O-M’s Gillian Clark added a 93.

Scarsdale junior Kaitlyn Lee and Medina freshman Melanie Green each shot 4-under rounds of 68 to share the lead in the individual championships.

Three-time defending state champion Lindsay May of Auburn, who is a four-time Section III champion, in a three-way tie for third place at 1-over 73. May has signed to play at Clemson in the fall.

Play was suspended at one point for an hour due to thunderstorms.

Day 2 action begins Sunday at 11 a.m.
