THE VALLEY — Sayre senior Ryan Murrelle capped a stellar four-year varsity career with his first trip to the PIAA Class AA Championships and is the 2017-18 Valley Sports Report “Golfer of the Year.”

Murrelle, who missed qualifying for States by 1 strokes in his sophomore and junior seasons, advanced to States last fall with a ninth-place finish at the East Regionals.

Murrelle began his postseason with a sixth-place finish at the District 4, Class AA Championships, which was the worst finish there of his career. He won a District title as a junior, was runner-up as a freshman, and finished fourth as a sophomore.

Murrelle, who was the NTL “Player of the Year” with a 78.14 scoring average, finished 25th at the PIAA Golf Championships

The remainder of the All-Valley Super 7 are:

Sam Taylor, sophomore, Tioga: A three-time state qualifier, Taylor finished first at the IAC Small School Championships, and was sixth at the Section IV, Class C Championships.

Taylor finished seventh at Section IV Medalists Tournament to earn third straight trip to New York State Championships.

A.J. Middendorf, junior, Tioga: Middendorf, who shot a school-record 31 in 2017, finished second at IAC Small School Championships, and at Section IV, Class C Championships this spring.

Middendorf tied for 19th at Section IV Medalists Tournament.

Alex Tomasso, junior, Waverly: Alex Tomasso, who shot a school-record 35 early this season and matched it twice later in the season, finished second at the IAC Championships.

Alex Tomasso finished sixth at Section IV Championships to qualify for the New York State Championships for the fourth time. She finished 28th at States.

Capria Picco, senior, Waverly: A four-time state qualifier and former Section IV Champion, won the IAC Championships with an 83, matching Alex Tomasso’s record set in 2017.

Capria Picco finished fourth at the Section IV Championships, and 50th at the New York State Championships.

Nate Kennedy, junior, Athens: Kennedy finished second at District 4, Class AAA Championships to advance to the East Regionals for the second consecutive year.

Kennedy finished with the ninth-best scoring average in the NTL.

Sidney Tomasso, freshman, Waverly: Sidney Tomasso, who established a new freshman record for the Lady Wolverines with a 38, finished fourth at the IAC Championships.

Sidney Tomasso finished fifth at the Section IV Championships to qualify for the New York State Championships for the second time, where she was 57th.

Honorable Mention: Waverly freshman Gabby Picco, Waverly sophomore Gianna Picco, and Sayre’s Nate Sweet.
