ATHENS — Athens scored five runs in the second inning, and five more in the third inning on its way to an 11-2 four-inning win over Towanda here Saturday morning in the opening game of the Gilbert-Brown 8U Memorial Baseball Tournament.
Athens scored one run in the home half of the first, then stretched their lead to 6-0 after two innings, and 11-0 after three, before Towanda finally got on the board in the top of the fourth.
Peter Bertsch homered, scored two runs, and drove in a run, Graham Steinfelt singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, and Joe Dickerson singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run to pace Athens at the plate.
Griffin Smith singled, scored one run, and knocked in two runs in the win, while Sam Cheresnowsky scored a run, and drove in a run, Logan Swire, Theron May, Jaxson Holbrook, and Jacob Saxon each had an RBI, and Tyler Pelchy scored a run
Saxon started on the mound and earned the win, allowing just one hit in 2 2/3 innings. He fanned six and walked two.
Dickerson, Shea Davidson, and Cartyr Cockcroft combined to pitch the final 1 1/3 innings and struck out three.
Athens hosts Troy Saturday at 9 a.m., while Waverly squares off with Tioga-Lawrenceville.
