YOUTH GOLF (18U): TIOGA'S TAYLOR, SAYRE'S MURRELLE FINISH 1-2 AT SOARING EAGLES TOURNEY (2018-07-18)

WAVERLY'S TOMASSO FINISHES SECOND IN 18U GIRLS DIVISION

ELMIRA — For the second day in a row, Tioga junior Sam Taylor and recent Sayre grad Ryan Murrelle finished 1-2 — this time at the Soaring Eagles stop on the Central New York PGA Juniors Tour here Tuesday.

Taylor shot a 76 to win the 18U Division by two strokes over Murrelle, while Corning junior Tyler Thomas finished third with a 79.

Taylor bogeyed the second hole, and birdied the par-3 sixth hole to shoot an even-par 35 on the front nine, while Thomas, who also had a bogey and a birdie on the first eight holes, carded a double-bogey on the ninth hole to finish at 37 on the front.

Murrelle, who bogeyed four of the first seven holes, carded a birdie not he par-4 ninth hole to shoot a 39 on the front nine.

Taylor and Murrelle each birded the par-5 10th hole, while Taylor carded a bogey.

Taylor was even-par and stretched his lead to four strokes over both Murrelle and Thomas after 13 holes, but played the next four holes at four-over par and saw Murrelle close the gap to two strokes beading to the 18th tee.

Taylor sealed the win with a par on 18.

WAVERLY’S TOMASSO FINISHES SECOND IN 18U GIRLS DIVISION
DeWitt senior Lena Jones shot an 81 for a three-stroke victory over Waverly junior Alex Tomasso in the 18U girls division at the Soaring Eagles stop on the Central New York PGA Juniors Tour Tuesday.

Jones shot a one-over par 36 on the front nine and led Tomasso by five strokes at the turn. She stretched her lead to seven strokes after 14 holes.
