ATHENS — Waverly jumped out to an early lead, and held off an Athens challenge on its way to an 8-5 win here Wednesday evening in the championship game of the Gilbert-Brown Memorial 8U Baseball Tournament.

Athens took a quick 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by Peter Bertsch in the top of the first inning, but Waverly answered with four runs in the home half of the inning.

Waverly extended its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning, but Athens countered with three runs on a bases-loaded triple by Bertsch to close the gap to 5-4 after 3 1/2 innings.

After Waverly scored a run in the in bottom of the fourth, it scored two more runs in the fifth inning to push its lead to 8-4.

Bertsch drove in his fifth run of the game with a groundout in the top of the sixth inning to provide the final margin.

Waverly, which benefitted from 12 base on balls, was led at the plate by Griffin Walter, who stroked a pair of singles, scored two runs, and had two RBI in a five-hit attack.

Rhylee Stotler singled and scored two runs in the win, while Jack Pipher singled, scored one run, and drove in a run, Cooper Hugo singled and had two RBI, Brayden Bowman had two RBI, Axel Murray, Blake Draper, and Caden Vanderhoof each scored a run, and Brody Lambert drove in one run.

Walter earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on one hit in three innings, while striking out eight and walking just one.

After a pair of Waverly relievers were tagged for three runs in 1/3 of an inning, Pipher closed out the game, allowing one run on one hit with six strikeouts and four walks in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Bertsch tripled and singled and had five RBI to pace Athens’ at the plate, while Sam Cheresnowsky singled and scored one run, Griffin Smith scored two runs, and Jacob Saxon and Shea Davidson each crossed the plate once.

Saxon had the best turn on the mound for Athens, allowing two runs — one earned — on three hits, while striking out six and walking two in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
