PA. STATE LITTLE LEAGUE (JUNIORS): SAYRE OPENS STATE TOURNAMENT WITH 13-6 WIN OVER PENN RIDGE (2018-07-25)

STONESBORO, Pa. — Sayre scored nine runs in the top of the fourth inning to erase a one-run deficit en route to a 13-6 win over Penn Ridge here Wednesday in the opening game of the Pa. Little League Junior Division state tournament  at the Lakeview-Knothole Little League complex.

Sayre jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lucas Horton, David Northrup, and Brayden Horton each drew walks to open the game, then Mason Houseknecht drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly.

With two outs, Kannon VanDuzer and Jackson Hubbard stroked back-to-back RBI singles to make it 3-0.

Penn Ridge took advantage of a Sayre throwing error to plate a pair of runs in a four-run rally in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-3 lead.

Brayden Horton belted a two-run double to start Sayre’s decisive nine-run rally, and ripped a two-RBI single to cap the scoring. In between, Hubbard and Lucas Horton each drove in runs with RBI singles.

Despite scoring 13 runs in the win, Sayre left 15 runners on base, including nine in scoring position.

Brayden Horton had three hits, including a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had three RBI, and Hubbard stroked three singles, scored one run, and drove in two runs to pace Sayre’s 13-hit attack, while Lucas Horton singled twice, scored three runs, and knocked in one run.

Zack Garrity doubled, scored two runs, and drove in a run for Sayre in the win, while Northrup singled and scored two runs, Houseknecht and Kegan Hayford each singled, scored once, and drove in a run, VanDuzer singled and had two RBI, and Josh Arnold scored one run, and drove in one run.

Lucas Horton started on the mound, allowing four runs — all unearned — on two hits, while striking out one and walking two.

VanDuzer earned the win, striking out three and walking two in 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief, while Brayden Horton allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 2 1/3 innings, and Houseknecht walked two in 1/3 inning.

Sayre will face the winner of Thursday morning's game between Elk-McKean and Upper Moreland Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the winner's bracket semifinals.
