VALLEY RIVALS RENEW RIVALRY OCT. 12

Valley Sports Report
THE VALLEY — Oct. 12 is a date many Valley football fans have circled on their calendars.

The Week 7 match-up marks the renewal of the Waverly-Tioga rivalry at Waverly’s Memorial Stadium.

The Valley rivals have met three times in the last nine years (the Valley Sports Report era) with Waverly coming out on top in all three contests.

In the first football game Valley Sports Report ever provided coverage for, the Wolverines rode the powerful running of Kevin Gorman to a 29-28 win over Tioga in Week 1 of the 2009 season.  (Read the game story by clicking here.)

In 2012, the year following both programs’ historic runs into the state semifinals, Waverly used a goal-line stand to keep the mighty Tigers out of the end zone en route to a 14-8 win. (Read the game story by clicking here.)

In 2016, Waverly rolled to a 44-24 win at home in Week 10. Both teams were eliminated from their respective playoffs in Week 8. (Read the game story by clicking here.)

Prior to 2009, the Tigers won the first eight games in the series, including a 38-0 decision in 1993 — the first meeting of the two programs.

In 1999, Tioga traveled to Memorial Stadium and handed Waverly, 7-0 entering the contest, a 22-6 defeat.

In 2004 and ’05, Tioga won back-to-back thrillers by scores of 22-20 and 22-21, respectively.
