IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: TIOGA HOLDS OFF CANDOR'S SECOND-HALF RALLY IN 62-61 WIN (2019-01-15)

CANDOR - Tioga raced out to an 18-point halftime lead, then held on for dear life in the second half for a 62-61 win over Candor here Tuesday night in IAC South Small School Division boys basketball action.

Senior Pierce Hendershot knocked down an early 3-pointer, was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line, and scored 10 points in the first quarter, and junior Sam Taylor canned a pair of 3-pointers to fuel Tioga's 22-11 first-quarter blitz.

Junior Thomas Clark scored six points in the second quarter, Hendershot added five points, and Taylor drained another 3-pointer as the Tigers extended their lead to 39-21 at the half.

The tide turned drastically - 180 degrees to be exact - in the second half.

Candor's Shawn Watson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and was 3-for-3 for nine points in the third quarter, Kevin Cotton added six points, and Daniel Thomas drained a 3-pointer to spark a 22-11 run that trimmed the deficit to 50-43.

Marcus Rypkema scored six points in the fourth quarter for Candor, while Cotton added five points, and Watson canned another 3-pointer, but Tioga junior Derrick Barto nailed a pair of 3-pointers, and the Tigers made 4 of 6 free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

Hendershot, who was 10-for-11 from the free-throw line, led Tioga with 17 point, but only two in the second half, while Cook scored a career-high 12 points, Taylor and Barto connected on three 3-pointer each and scored 11 points apiece, and senior Lucas Klossner chipped in with nine points.

Watson, who knocked down five 3-pointers in the contest, led Candor with 18 points, while Cotton scored 13, and Thomas and Rypkema added eight points apiece.

Tioga, now 7-7, host Groton Friday night.
