WAVERLY - Waverly jumped out to a 10-point first-quarter lead, then held off a fourth-quarter rally in a 38-34 win over Whitney Point here Thursday night in IAC Large School junior varsity girls basketball action.

Lourden Benjamin scored the first two buckets of the game to give the junior Lady Wolverines a 4-2 lead with 5:33 left in the first quarter.

After a bucket by Alyssa Sindoni, Olivia Nittinger knocked down a 3-pointer was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to give Waverly a 13-4 lead with 50 seconds left in the first quarter.

Paige Robinson's free throw in the closing seconds gave the Lady Wolverines a 14-4 lead heading into the second quarter, but Whitney Point held Waverly scoreless for more than five minutes and trimmed the deficit to 14-8.

The Lady Wolverines led 19-12 at the half, and buckets by Sindoni and Benjamin in the opening minute of the third quarter pushed the lead back to 11 points, at 23-12.

Whitney Point, which trailed 27-18 after three quarters, closed the gap to 37-34 with 2:14 remaining in the game, but the Waverly defense held them scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

Waverly, which made 9 of 12 free-throw attempts through the first three quarters, made just 3 of 10 down the stretch, but it was enough to seal the victory.

NIttinger led Waverly with 17 points, while Sindoni and Benjamin added eight points apiece, and Peyton Shaw chipped in with four points.

Waverly improves to 8-5 on the season.
