IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: TIOGA RIDES FAST START TO 59-35 WIN OVER GROTON (2019-01-18)

GROTON - Tioga jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first eight minutes on its way to a 59-35 win over Groton here Friday night in IAC Small School girls basketball action.

Junior Giovanna Rossi scored six points in the first quarter, and sophomore Olivia Ayres was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line to fuel a 15-4 run.

The Lady Tigers had five different players reach the scoring column in the second quarter, led by four points apiece from Ayres and sophomore Eve Wood, as they stretched their lead to 29-15 at the half.

Wood pumped in nine points, including a trey, in the third quarter, and Ayres and sophomore Ari Manwaring each knocked down 3-pointers in a 21-13 run that pushed the Tioga advantage to 50-28 entering the final eight minutes.

Wood led Tioga with 17 points and six rebounds, while Ayres had 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and Rossi had 13 points, a career-high 24 rebounds, and one blocked shot.

Manwaring added five points and seven rebounds in the win, while senior Rebekah Richter had four points and five boards, and freshman Julia Bellis chipped in with four points and seven rebounds.

Brooke Brecht led Groton with eight points.

Tioga, now 4-10, returns to action Friday at Newfield.
