IAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: WHITNEY POINT EDGES WAVERLY, 57-56, IN FINAL SECONDS (2019-01-19)

WHITNEY POINT - Whitney Point scored with four seconds remaining in the game to pull out a 57-56 win over Waverly here Friday night in IAC junior varsity boys basketball action.

Whitney Point raced out to an 18-9 lead after the first eight minutes, but Waverly trimmed the deficit to five points, at 31-26, at the half. Davis Croft knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter, and Joe Tomasso connected on 6 of 8 free throws as the junior Wolverines outscored WP 15-11.

Tomasso canned two 3-pointers in the third quarter, while Liam Traub drained a trey, and Brennan Traub converted an old-fashioned three-point play as Waverly drew within one point, at 41-40, heading into the final eight minutes.

Brennan Traub drained a pair of 3-pointer, and Croft connected on his fifth trey of the game to help Waverly to a 56-52 lead with one minute left in the game.

Point's Trystan Layton hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining to trim the deficit to one point, at 56-55. After Waverly failed to extend its lead, Whitney Point rebounded and was fouled with 7 seconds remaining.

Whitney Point missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the rebound went out-of-bounds off a Waverly player. Owen Dunham broke free on the resulting in-bounds play and scored the game-winner.

Croft led Waverly with 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocked shots, while Tomasso had 13 points, Brennan Traub added 11 points, and Liam Traub chipped in with seven point and five rebounds.

Elias Barden led Whitney Point with 19 points, and Brent Isaacs added 16.

Waverly, now 9-4, returns to action Friday when it hosts Notre Dame.
