NTL JV BOYS BASKETBALL: SAYRE JUMPS OUT TO EARLY LEAD; TOPS NEB 28-20 (2019-02-12)

SAYRE - Sayre scored the first six points of the game,and led by as many as 17 points en route to a 28-20 win over NEB here Monday evening in NTL Small School Division junior varsity boys basketball action.

Matt Lane knocked down a pair of jumpers, sandwiched around a bucket in the low blocks by Zach Belles, to give the junior Redskins an early 6-0 lead.

After NEB trimmed the lead to 6-4, Belles scored on an offensive rebound, and Lane turned a steal into a breakaway lay-up to make it 10-4.

Lane finished off the scoring with a bucket in the final seconds to make it 12-4 after the first eight minutes.

The juniors Redskins scored the only points of the second quarter - a bucket by Connor Young off a feed from Ja Huang, and a putback on the offensive boards by Young - to make it 16-4 at the half.

NEB scored the first five of the points of the second half to cut the lead to 16-9, Lane knocked down a 3-pointer to trigger a 7-0 spurt to end the quarter.

Young and Belles each scored in the low blocks to make it 23-9, then Brayden Horton scored off a feed from Huang to make it 25-9. A Horton free throw in the final seconds gave Sayre a 26-9 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Lane led Sayre with 11 points, while Belles had six points and seven rebounds, Young added six points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots, and Horton grabbed five boards.

Sayre returns to action Thursday at Cowanesque Valley.
