NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: ATHENS DIALS LONG DISTANCE IN 65-42 WIN OVER EDISON (2019-01-13)

ELMIRA HEIGHTS - Athens knocked down five 3-pointers in the second quarter to build a nine-point halftime lead, then blew the game open in the fourth quarter in a 65-42 win over Thomas A. Edison here Wednesday night in non-league boys basketball action.

The Wildcats connected on eight of their 10 3-pointers in the game in the first half.

Junior Aaron Lane drained a pair of 3-pointers for six points, while sophomore Benny Gambrell added five points, and senior Aric Westbrook connected from long distance, but the Spartans kept pace in a 14-14 first quarter.

Lane canned two more 3-pointers in the second quarter, while Westbrook added five points, and junior Brady Smith and freshman J.J. Babcock each came off the bench to make 3-pointers to fuel a 17-8 run that gave the Wildcats a 31-23 lead at the half.

Westbrook canned his third trey of the game and scored five points in the third quarter, and Gambrell added four points as the Wildcats stretched their lead to 11 points, at 43-32, entering the final eight minutes.

Lane scored nine points in the fourth quarter and Gambrell added seven points to spark a 22-11 run that put the game away for the Wildcats.

Lane led Athens with 21 points, including five 3-pointers, while Westbrook scored 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, Gambrell added 16 points, and Smith chipped in with five points.

Jack Shaw led Edison, which canned six 3-pointers, with 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Athens, now 13-8, wraps up the regular season Friday night at Wyalusing.
