IAC SOFTBALL: TIOGA'S WESSELS DOMINANT IN FIRST VARSITY START; ROSSI POWERS OFFENSE IN 17-1 WIN OVER LANSING (21 PHOTOS) (2019-03-29)

LANSING "” Sophomore Kindra Wessels was dominant in her first varsity start, and junior Giovanna Rossi led Tioga's 20-hit attack in a 17-1 six-inning win over Lansing here Friday afternoon in IAC Division 2 softball action.

Wessels, who had one varsity win in her only relief appearance last year, allowed one run on two hits, while striking out 13 and walking three in six innings of work.

Rossi, who banged out three doubles, had four hits, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and seven RBI, while Wessels had four hits, including a double, four runs scored, and one RBI, and freshman Julia Bellis had four hits, including a pair of doubles, scored one run, and three RBI in Tioga's offensive barrage.

Junior Shaina Franks stroked three singles and scored four runs for the Lady Tigers, while sophomore Olivia Ayres doubled and singled, scored three runs, and drove in two runs, freshman Austin Vance singled twice, scored one run, and drove in a run, and junior Michaela Webb singled and scored one run.

Tioga took the lead quickly, with four runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, Franks, Wessels and Rossi stroked consecutive singles to make it 1-0. After a walk to Ayres, Bellis delivered a run with a single to extend the lead to 2-0.

Vance made it 3-0 with an RBI single, and junior Hannah Fox plated the final run off the rally with a groundout.

Rossi ripped a two-run double down the left-field line in the top of the second inning to give the Lady Tigers a 6-0 lead.

After the Lady Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, Tioga put the game away with seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. The rally featured RBI groundouts by Fox and junior Ally Chapman and four consecutive run-scoring hits - an RBI single by Wessels, a two-run double by Rossi, and RBI single by Ayres, and an RBI double by Bellis.

Tioga finished off the scoring in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Rossi, an RBI double by Ayres, and an RBI single by Bellis.

Tioga hosts divisional rival Trumansburg Monday.
