VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Tioga standout John Worthing has earned High School All-American status as he qualified for the Senior division 145-pound consolation finals at the 30th Annual NHSCA Nationals here Saturday.

Worthing, the lone Tioga County wrestler to survive the first-day championship bracket, ran into a tough foe in the quarterfinals Saturday morning. He dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker to three-time Pennsylvania state place-winner Gabe Miller, who eventually advanced to the championship match.

Meanwhile, The Tigers' recently-crowned 138-pound state champion rebounded by beating three-time Minnesota place-winner Chandler Mooney, 7-3, Kentucky state champ and four-time state placer Nate Wheeler, 6-4, and former Missouri state place-winner Devin Schwartzkopf, 4-3. Worthing will face Dylan Fuchs of Nevada Sunday morning for third place. Fuchs is a three-time state champ and four-time placer.

Tioga's other six competitors fell short of the podium.

Austin Lamb, wrestling in Senior 160, dropped a 2-0 decision to Clayton Stewart of West Virginia in an elimination bout.

Brady Worthing, competing in Junior 138, defeated David Steigler of Virginia, 5-2, then chalked up a 14-1 major decision over Darian Camery of Kentucky. His tourney ended with a 4-2 loss to Clayton Reed of Pennsylvania.

David MacWhinnie, competing at Junior 132, bowed out of the tourney with a 9-5 loss to Ohio's Chase Caprella.

Dom Wood, a first-year wrestler competing at Junior 182, saw his tournament end at the hands of Pennsylvania 's Dane Csencsits by fall in 54 seconds.

The Tigers' Mason Welch, wrestling at Freshman 113, had mixed results against a pair of Virginia wrestlers. He registered a 16-0 technical fall over Nikolas Voros before bowing out of the tournament with a 7-2 setback against Brady Bollander. Bollander placed second at states this past season, Voros was sixth.

Emmett Wood 152, was eliminated by Samuel Bergin, a Connecticut 6th-place finisher, by fall in 53 seconds.
