IAC SOFTBALL: HAMMOND THROWS THIRD NO-HITTER; WAVERLY BLANKS NOTRE DAME, 7-0 (14 PHOTOS) (2019-04-17)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY "” Senior Wendi Hammond threw a no-hitter - her third of the season - to lead Waverly to a 7-0 win over Notre Dame here Wednesday night in IAC Division 3 softball action.

Hammond fanned 14 and walked just one in a seven-inning complete-game effort. She threw just 88 pitches, and the Lady Wolverine defense was perfect behind her.

Earlier this season, Hammond struck out 15 and walked none in a one-hitter against the Lady Crusaders in an 8-1 win.

Waverly's offense produced more runs than it would need in the home half of the first inning, scoring five times, thanks in part to a two-out Notre Dame error.

Hammond led off the inning with an infield single, then stole second, and sophomore Hali Jenner worked a walk. Hammond and Jenner each notched stolen bases on different pitches to put runners on second and third.

With one out, junior Paige Lewis stroked a single into right field to give the Lady Wolverines a 2-0 lead.

With two outs, Lewis scored on an infield throwing error that allowed junior Morgan Adams to reach base. After Adams stole second, junior Morgan Adams delivered an RBI single to right field to make it 4-0. Lee stole second and scored on a pair of passed balls to make it 5-0.

Hammond hit the first pitch in the bottom of the second over the center-field fence for her sixth home run of the season to give Waverly a 6-0 lead.

Waverly tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Hammond ripped a two-out double to left-center field, and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Jenner.

Hammond issued a one-out walk in the top of the third inning, then retired the final 14 batters she faced.

Hammond had three hits, including a home run and a double, stole three bases, scored three runs, and drove in one run to pace Waverly at the plate, while Lee singled twice, scored one run, and knocked in one run, and Lewis singled, scored one run, and had two RBI.

Jenner singled, scored one run, and drove in a run for the Lady Wolverines, while senior Sabrina Pierce and junior Riley Hall each added a single, and Adams scored a run and stole two bases.

Waverly, now 10-1, hosts Newark Valley Monday in a key divisional match-up.
